Microsoft Copilot Home, Code and Autopilot unify work in one app

Microsoft announced the redesign on September 25, 2026, with Home and Code in Frontier first and Autopilot in private preview.

TL;DR

  • Microsoft redesigned Copilot on September 25, 2026 around Home, Code and Autopilot inside one app for work and personal accounts.
  • Home combines Chat, Cowork and Office document creation, while Code builds sandboxed internal apps inside a Microsoft 365 tenant.
  • Autopilot is the former Scout agent, now framed as a governed digital teammate with identity, memory and audit controls.
  • Pricing details remain incomplete because Microsoft is pairing user subscription licenses with usage-based billing for Cowork, Code and Autopilot.

Microsoft Copilot Home Code Autopilot is Microsoft's September 25, 2026 redesign that puts chat, Office work, code generation and autonomous agents into one Copilot app for personal and work accounts. The change matters because Microsoft is moving Copilot from an assistant interface toward a governed work platform inside Microsoft 365.

Microsoft announced the new Copilot on the Official Microsoft Blog on September 25, 2026, and The Verge and ZDNet both reported the same day that the app now has three main tabs: Home, Code and Autopilot. Microsoft also rebranded Scout, the personal AI assistant shown earlier in 2026, as Autopilot, according to The Verge. The first rollout is staged, with Home and Code going to the Frontier program first and Autopilot expanding to private preview at the end of September 2026.

How Microsoft Copilot Home Code Autopilot works

Microsoft Copilot Home Code Autopilot works by routing different kinds of work through one Copilot client instead of separate consumer and enterprise surfaces. Home combines Copilot Chat and Cowork, and Microsoft's announcement says Office in Copilot adds Word, Excel and PowerPoint inside the Copilot experience. ZDNet reported that the same interface appears for personal and work accounts, while work accounts add secure access to enterprise data across Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, Dynamics 365 and other Microsoft-hosted repositories.

The redesign changes Copilot from a set of branded entry points into one Microsoft 365 work surface: Home handles conversation and Office output, Code creates internal tools in a sandbox, and Autopilot runs assigned work as an agent with tenant controls. That mechanism explains why governance and cost now sit beside user experience.

Code is the most material addition for software and operations teams because it lets users create an app, tracker, dashboard or automation from a prompt and share it as a cloud-hosted internal app. The Verge quoted Jared Spataro, chief marketing officer of AI at work at Microsoft, saying Code is "Powered by the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot" and "runs in a sandboxed environment and can be hosted securely within your tenant." ZDNet added that those apps run in Copilot using Microsoft Copilot Managed Runtime, which Microsoft manages as part of the Microsoft 365 tenant.

Autopilot is Microsoft's cloud agent for longer-running work, not another chat tab. The Verge reported that Autopilot has its own cloud computer instance and can watch Teams channels, run recurring work tasks and handle follow-ups. Spataro described the enterprise model this way: "Autopilot lives in your tenant with its own identity, memory, computer, and workspace, and it's built on Microsoft IQ so it understands how your organization actually works."

When each Copilot feature rolls out

Microsoft is not shipping every Copilot feature to every customer on September 25, 2026. The Official Microsoft Blog gives the clearest schedule, while The Verge and ZDNet describe the same staged access in their launch coverage.

FeatureMicrosoft's stated timingWho gets it first
HomeFrontier rollout in the coming weeks after September 25, 2026Microsoft Frontier program customers
CodeFrontier rollout at the end of September 2026, with broad availability in the coming weeksFrontier customers, then Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro preview later in 2026
AutopilotPrivate preview at the end of September 2026Selected private preview customers
TodayPrivate preview in October 2026Copilot first, then Outlook and Teams
@Copilot in TeamsPrivate preview by the end of September 2026Teams private preview users

The evidence is thin on hands-on performance because the launch coverage relies mostly on Microsoft's briefing and announcement materials. ZDNet's Ed Bott explicitly wrote that he had not had hands-on experience with the new apps and that delivered software might not match the announcement. Microsoft has also not provided exact usage prices in the supplied evidence, so budget impact cannot be calculated from the launch materials alone.

How billing and governance change

Billing changes because Microsoft is splitting Copilot between a user subscription license and usage-based charges for more agentic work. The Verge reported that a regular Copilot user subscription license covers Copilot in Chat and in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. The same report says Cowork, Code and Autopilot use usage-based billing, and that long-running agentic capabilities or models such as Astra and Fable will be billed based on usage.

Admins should check three items before adding users to Frontier or private preview: which Microsoft 365 users receive the new Copilot client, which tenant data sources Autopilot and Code can reach, and how FinOps for AI reports usage by user, feature and workload. The specific control to watch is FinOps for AI, which The Verge says IT admins will need for managing AI spend. Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business and Dynamics 365 permissions also become budget controls because they define what the agent can act on and what work users can push into usage-billed flows.

What marketers should change first

For search and marketing teams, the operational change is internal discoverability, not a public ranking change. If Copilot drafts plans, dashboards and follow-ups from Outlook, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive for Business, then naming, permissions and document quality affect what colleagues can retrieve through AI work tools.

That connection is an inference from Microsoft's architecture, not a ranking claim. The evidence does not show that the new Copilot changes Google Search, Bing Search, paid search auctions or public AI answer citations. It does show that Copilot can create Word, Excel and PowerPoint files inside the app, can build dashboards and automations, and can run agents in Microsoft 365 contexts, so marketing teams should clean campaign names, channel taxonomies, approval docs and reporting locations before broad internal use.

Practitioner reaction shows Microsoft still has a communication problem. In the r/copilotstudio Reddit discussion posted on September 25, 2026, several commenters said the launch graphic was confusing, and one asked how Autopilot differs from Cowork and how Code differs from GitHub Copilot. Treat that as site-owner and developer signal, not authority, but it aligns with ZDNet's description of Copilot's previous client lineup as fragmented and with Microsoft's decision to put the product behind one app.

What happens next in Copilot

The next checks are the end of September 2026 private previews for Autopilot and @Copilot in Teams, the Frontier rollout for Code, and the October 2026 private preview for Today in Copilot. Teams should watch for actual tenant controls, FinOps for AI reporting detail and Microsoft 365 Premium or Pro preview terms later in 2026, because those will determine whether the new Copilot is a controlled productivity layer or another unmanaged AI cost center.

FAQ

What is Microsoft Copilot Home Code Autopilot?

Microsoft Copilot Home Code Autopilot is the September 25, 2026 Copilot redesign built around three work modes. Home combines chat, Cowork and Office creation, Code builds internal apps and automations, and Autopilot runs assigned work as a governed agent inside Microsoft 365.

When will Copilot Autopilot be available?

Autopilot enters private preview at the end of September 2026, according to Microsoft's announcement. The evidence does not give a general availability date. Organizations outside the private preview should watch Microsoft 365 admin communications and preview program eligibility rather than assume immediate access.

Is Copilot Code the same as GitHub Copilot?

Copilot Code is not described as the same product as GitHub Copilot. Microsoft says it uses the same underlying technology, but Code is built for creating apps, trackers, dashboards and automations inside Copilot, hosted in a sandboxed Microsoft 365 tenant environment.

How much does the new Microsoft Copilot cost?

Microsoft has not provided exact prices in the supplied evidence for all new Copilot usage. The model combines a user subscription license for regular Copilot experiences with usage-based billing for Cowork, Code and Autopilot, which means agentic work can create variable spend.

Does the new Copilot affect SEO?

The launch evidence does not show a direct SEO ranking effect. The practical search impact is internal: Copilot can retrieve and create work from Microsoft 365 data, so content structure, naming and permissions inside SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams and Outlook can affect internal AI findability.
